We Have FUN ACTIVITIES for the Whole Family
No matter what your age or area of interest, committees at Peace Lutheran have something for you!
You can join fellow members of the congregation for a wide variety of events, including those after service on Sundays to Saturday evening and weekday activities. Here are a just a few examples:
FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP
- There's always time for good food and sharing among members and guests, including the following activities:
Sunday Fellowship Meals . . . gatherings are held throughout the year, often featuring special themes such as the "Heritage Meal" where members share their family recipes with others, or the "Polka Sunday," featuring German food and music.
Special Weekday Meals . . . Wednesday evening gatherings include meals such as the Lenten Soup Suppers prior to Lenten Services, or special meals before Advent services.
Children's Activities . . . The youth also have opportunities for fun gatherings and meals, such as gathering at the church for baking cookies or serving Easter breakfast to the congregation.
WEEKEND AND HOLIDAY FAMILY FUN
- Looking for some fun social activities away from home? Check out these possibilities:
Saturday Night Activities . . . Members gather on a Saturday night each month for fun activities, including Craft night (when members bring their personal crafts work on while sharing with others) and Game night (when a variety of games are played by members of all ages). Also, don't forget the Chocolate Fest/Sing-a-Long, complete with chocolate fountains and delicious items to dip!
New Years Eve Gathering . . . Members say good bye to the old and welcome in the new year with an evening of games, food and sharing.
WEEKDAY ACTIVITIES
- If you have time during the week, you can join other members for activities that include exercise, fun, and community service. Here are some examples:
Tai Chi - Take a break from the hectic week with a class at the church.
Pinochle - Gather with others for fun and fellowship.
Pillars of Peace - Older members of Peace gather on a regular basis for meals and activities, including "field trips" to community events.
Crosslines Volunteer Day - Join others from Peace for a time to help organize items and support the mission of Crosslines in Joplin.

In addition to time for fun and fellowship, Peace members give of their time and talents by supporting the church committees and groups. Here are examples of how you may help out the church:

- Church and Society
- This committee helps to strengthen Peace Lutheran's ties and involvement with local and regional service agencies. See how you can join in helping others in the community and around the world!
Here are some examples of organizations Peace is helping:
- Crosslines of Joplin:
Members contribute clothing and food to this organization that distributes items to those in need. In addition, members volunteer to help sort items at Crosslines headquarters.
- Oaks Indian Mission
: Members contribute money and items of need to the mission, located in Oklahoma.
- Cropwalk:
Members participate in the annual walk, to raise funds for feeding the hungry in many areas.
- Habitat for Humanity:
Members volunteer their time and efforts, helping to build homes and provide meals for workers.
- Salvation Army:
Members volunteer to help with the annual Christmas bell-ringing program.
- Assistance to Various Lutheran congregations and organizations:
Special offerings at various times of the year are earmarked to assist growing Synod congregations and Lutheran relief agencies.

- Christian Education
- This committee coordinates educational programs for congregational members of all ages. These include ongoing programs such as Sunday School and Bible Study, and special programs. No matter what your age or area of interest, there's a place for you!
Activities include:
- Sunday School:
Classes are held each week at 9:15. They include programs for adults, and youth from pre-school through high school. An intergenerational opening program featuring music and prayer unites classes to begin each session.
- Confirmation Classes:
Youth who are confirmation-age participate in classes preparing them for confirmation rites.
- Youth Group:
A group for teens provides fellowship opportunities, as well as opportunities to serve the congregation and the community.
- Peace Library:
Numerous books, videos and other materials are available for checkout by congregational members. They range from Biblical resources to books on dealing with life's challenges. The continued growth of the library is made possible thanks to the generous contributions of congregational members.

- Evangelism and Fellowship
- This committee focuses on sharing the word of the Lord and sharing fellowship within the congregation. If you like to meet other people and share with others, this committee is for you!
Examples of programs involving this committee include:
- Coordinating refreshments after Sunday services:
Congregational members gather in fellowship hall after church for coffee, juice and refreshments. If you like to share your tasty treats and visit with fellow members, this offers many opportunities!
- Special Events:
Numerous special events are held throughout the year, coordinated by the Evangelism and Fellowship committee. There are many ways you can join in!
- Pillars of Peace:
A special group of older adults meets on a regular basis at Peace. This group provides sharing and fellowship, while strengthening friendships through the church.

- Worship and Music
- This committee plays a vital role in the preparation for worship each week. There are many opportunities for volunteers to serve, with a wide range of talents.
Some of the areas reached by this committee include:
- Numerous Volunteer Positions:
Members serve each week in support of the worship service. Roles involved include serving as ushers, liturgist, reader, communion assistant or acolyte. Congregational members also sing in the choir and present special music. Members of the Altar Guild prepare the sanctuary for services each week.
- Coordinating Special Decorations:
A variety of banners and other decorations adorn the sanctuary during seasons such as Lent/Easter and Advent/Christmas. Committee members plan and help to arrange the decorations.

- Building and Grounds
- This committee is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the facility. If you enjoy "handyman" work, there's a place for you! In addition to ongoing operations, the committee handles special programs, including:
- Seasonal yard work
: Volunteers take turns helping the exterior appearance of the grounds, by cutting grass and doing yard work.
- Seasonal "work days"
: Special clean-up days are held, when members come together for a thorough building cleaning and fellowship.

- Finance Committee
- This committee is responsible for reviewing the financial reports and budget status of the church. Volunteers serve this important role in church operations. A Stewardship campaign each year seeks involvement from congregational members. It is one example of personal stewardship as a year-round effort!

As you can see, there are many ways for members to play an active role at Peace Lutheran Church! These activities tied into the Mission of Peace to "unite together in worship, fellowship, witness, service, and support to preach and teach God's Word as professed in the confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America."
